More insightful events are unfolding in the case of wrongly incarcerated dancehall artiste Vybz Kartel as his lawyers have filed an application for his immediate release
Jamaica Weekly understands that the Lawyers of ‘Romping Shop’ hit maker Vybz Kartel has taken action for his immediate release from prison, along with his co-accused. An application has been filed and they are currently awaiting another scheduled hearing.
Vybz Kartel’s legal team is expected to be back in Court on June 10, 2024, to hear the Court of Appeals decision on whether the deejay and his co-accused should be re-tried for the 2011 murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams.
Fans of the entertainer are restless and at the edge of their seats as they await the final decision from the courts of appeal.
Back in March of this year, the Privy Council ruled that after carefully reviewing Kartel’s case, it was concluded that the men did not receive a fair trail, and that the case should be thrown out or they be given another trial. The final decision was turned over to the Jamaican court of Appeal.
If granted, the application, will only free Vybz Kartel, Shawn Storm Campbell, and Andre, Kahira Jones will remain behind bars to serve his full sentence for wounding with intent in the shooting of Chevallo Rodney in 2009. Jones was charged with wounding with intent, illegal possession of a firearm, and illegal possession of ammunition and was out on bail at the time when he was arrested in connection to the killing of Clive Williams along with Kartel and others in 2011.
We look forward to hearing the final say by the court of appeals next month. Vybz Kartel’s trial is the longest and most rigid trial Jamaica has ever witnessed, his case has also revealed may thing about the integrity of the Jamaican justice system.
